Rescue at Sea off Zambales coast

On the 25th of October 2010 at about 0700 hours while our cargo ship was sailing towards the port of Subic, our A/B on duty Lucky Barbieto while steering the ship have sighted a man floating at sea near Hermana Mayor island off Zambales coast. He informed the duty officer and me who was on the bridge that time, that there was a man floating at sea about a mile on our starboard bow.

I immediately put  the Engine on stand-by, slowed down the ship and called all crew to stand-by for rescue of the man floating at sea.

We tried to lower our Lifeboat / Rescue boat for rescuing the man we have sighted in the sea off Zambales coast. However our ship was rolling slightly so we aborted our plan to lower our lifeboat.

I decided instead to maneuver the ship so that the man can be lifted from the port side of our ship.

We thrown a lifebouy with attached rope to the fisherman floating in the sea and pulled him towards our accomodation ladder.

From the sea our crew successfully lifted the man onboard our ship, especially with the effort of
A/B Edgel Villa who went down in the accomodation ladder in order to pick the man from the sea.

We learned that the man we rescued from the sea is Ronnie Milano Saplala, 33 years old, fisherman and a native of Barangay Garreta, Palauig town in Zambales province. His banca capsized and he was floating at sea for about 24 hours when our alert A/B Lucky T. Barbieto sighted him floating at sea.

We reported the successful rescue to the Philippine Navy Coast Watch Station at Capones Island off Zambales coast. Afterwards the Philippine Navy Coast Watch contacted the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) that our ship which is bound for Subic Port have rescued a fisherman at sea.

The fisherman Ronnie Saplala was fetched by his relatives with an ambulance from the town of Palauig, Zambales.

Last thursday 10th of March 2011 when I visited our shipping line office in Manila, the Crewing Assistant handed to me a letter from the Office of Sangguniang Panlalawigan of the Province of Zambales.
